Default Catalyst causing slow loads.

I just bought an x800xl about a week ago, and the "normal" driver worked fine. But, just yesterday I decided to download the catalyst control center. Now, whenever I load a new area, the screen will just flicker from bright to dark for about 5-10 seconds before the hard drive actually kicks in and begins to load the thing. I know it's not an issue with memory, because I disabled all the unnecessary background processes like cli.exe that came packaged with the catalyst and I still have about the same amount of available memory. Any thoughts on how to fix it?

You can actually just uninstall the ATI CCC package and install only the latest driver safely.

I guess I could, but i'd kind of like to have access to the display options the ccc gives you. I was wondering if it was just some sort of visual setting that was causing this. I've tried fiddling around with stuff, but nothing seems to work so if noone else has any ideas i guess i'll just uninstall.

You can also get the 5.12 drivers and get the Control Panel version. It works well without the CCC bloat.

It has nothing to do with the control center.

The flickering seems to be because that the game switches to 2d mode when showing the loading screen and then to 3d mode again.

It does that for me as well, but it doesn't take long.

The only problem with the control center itself is slow loading, but then again how often to do you actually use it.

And 5.12 isn't really an option if you have a recent card.

Replace CCC with recent Ati Tray Tools. I'm using a X800 XL too with 6.4 drivers. Works fine.

latest is 6.7 been looking into similar issues

my CCC is trying to load mulitple instances... and I chaulk it up to the required .Net Framework...

Also, when my screen 'flickered' from dark to light, it was because of an Avivo Setting trying to take over the color intensity.

I have reverted mine back to 6.4 - I havent seemed to have good luck with 6.5 or 6.7...

x800 is a nice card- similar to mine, really- I know how frustrating it is when the game SHOULD be seemless with cards like this... GL

The min drivers you want are the 6.6 drivers, not the 6.7 drivers which are junk. Just remove the process cli.exe from the taskmanager to get rid of the CCC from memory. But, overall dont forget to turn on things like geometry instancing and Catalyst AI etc. It all helps.
